How low can you go?

Air America, Talk Host Backpedal on Attack Claim, Admit Mugging Report Was False

Fox News

An Air America talk-show host who accused "the right wing hate machine" of being responsible for an alleged attack on an on-air colleague did a fast backpedal Tuesday, apologizing for "jumping to conclusions" about a now-debunked mugging report.

Host Jon Elliott issued a written retraction of his remarkable on-air charge, saying: "I shouldn't have speculated based on hearsay that Randi Rhodes had been mugged and that it may have been an attack from a right wing hate machine. I apologize for jumping to conclusions based on an emotional reaction."

Air America also issued a statement, saying Rhodes "experienced an unfortunate incident hindering her from hosting the show. The reports of a presumed hate crime are unfounded."
Elliott's initial claim that Rhodes had been beaten "by the right wing" for her political views set the blogosphere abuzz Monday night.

Rhodes, whose program airs on Air America weekdays from 3-6 p.m. ET, allegedly informed Air America that she was struck while was walking down a street Sunday night near her Manhattan home. There even was a report on-air that she had suffered serious injuries and had lost several teeth.

FOXNews.com, however, spoke to Rhodes' lawyer Tuesday afternoon, and he quickly moved to shoot down speculation that she was the victim of a political hate crime.

"We don't know whether there was a deliberate intention aimed at her or whether it was an accident... she was pretty much, she was hurt badly when she fell and her face hit the ground," lawyer Robert Gaulin initially told FOXNews.com, adding that people on the street came to her aid. Gaulin later told the Daily News that Rhodes had fallen while out walking her dog near Park Avenue and 39th Street.

Elliott, meanwhile, went on a rant Monday night, telling listeners: "This does not appear to me to be a standard, grab-the-money-and-run mugging," and, "Is this an attempt by the right wing hate machine to silence one of our own?" Elliot also suggested that the act might have been meant to intimidate left-wing radio.

The report spread quickly Tuesday over the blogosphere, with the Google blog search showing hundreds of posts on the subject.

The New York City Police Department told FOXNews.com that they had no record of any attack in the area that Elliott mentioned — Park Avenue and 39th Street — and that Rhodes did not file a report of the incident with police.

"We have no record of her making any complaints whatsoever ... as far back as my computer goes," a police spokesman said. He said the records went back roughly 25 years.

The police spokesman, who asked not to be identified because of department policy, said that police "do not investigate things that are unreported," but encouraged Rhodes to report the incident if she would like police to investigate the matter. Police later attempted to contact Rhodes to see whether she wanted to file a report. Gaulin said Rhodes declined.

In a brief statement posted on its Web site Tuesday, Air America said replacement hosts will continue to fill in for Rhodes as she recuperates.

An Air America employee, who was not authorized to speak to the media and declined to be identified, told FOXNews.com Tuesday afternoon that Rhodes had been attacked, but said "it was not a hate crime."

The source said that Rhodes contacted several employees at Air America on Tuesday, and had told them that she was attacked but had only suffered chipped teeth, and would be seeing a dentist. Gaulin, however, said that Rhodes had been disoriented by the fall and really was not sure what had happened.

Man, and Air America wonders why they are making so little money compared to other radio shows. I bet they think the "Fairness Doctrine" would be a good idea too. Perhaps they can find future work at "The Onion".....

Our closest to a dictatorship? Errors with that.

I heard Sen. Barbara Boxer say that we are now the closest to a dictatorship in our history.

Well, she cannot be more wrong. Maybe in her world it is, but in mine, it is not. In dictatorships people are usually living in a country with far less crime, and doesn't have the problems we experience here in our country. Why is this? Quite simply countries which are under the rule of a dictator are SO under the control of that dictator, no one can get away with anything. If our current government is the feared "Big Brother" of the book 1984, they really suck at it.

If our government was so powerful, why are there groups like MS 13 running around on our streets? Our government cannot even stop the Hells Angels or the Sons of Silence from anything they do except an occasional bust now and then. But personally, I would rather have the last two mentioned running around our country than the first.

If you look to North Korea, you will see a dictatorship. And even with them, there have been worse. At least for what we know, Vlad Tepes or Idi Amin are not in North Korea. In terms of Hitler, North Korea seems tame. So, if we are close to, or part of a dictatorship, where are the mass killings and complete loss of freedoms?

Barbara can take this hyperactive imagination and use it on something else. If President Bush is a dictator, he is the weakest and lamest dictator this world has ever seen.

When Bill Clinton was in power, he killed more Americans against their will. Anyone remember Waco? Our soldiers were not drafted. Our soldiers signed up freely without any guns to their heads. When we have the Stalin-esque tactics of putting our soldiers in harms way without guns and the threat of death if they turn back to our lines, I will agree with her, but this is not our way, nor has it ever been.

Isn't amazing that if anyone on the right said statements like this they would be forced from office, or out of any public job they held within days, but on the left it is par for the course. People, do your homework. Do not fall for this kind of BS. It is part of why I changed parties and while it continues, I will never go back.

AL GORE, go away!

Dear Al Gore,

I read that your boy was speeding and arrested with many drugs. Now there are rumors in the national media that you could possible run for President again. I suggest you not do this because it sounds like the time lost by your family of having you in office is taking a toll.

Perhaps if you spent as much time trying to scare Americans about global warming on your family, these events and others past wouldn't happen. In addition to that, I cannot put a man in office to control our country if he can't control his family. Now you might say your son is of legal age and he can do as he pleases, but again, if you couldn't instill the morals and ethics in your kids in the first place, I would hate to see how you plan to lead the country away from the evils of drugs and other social ills.

Maybe its your wife Tipper's fault, as you were away at work during the raising of your children. In that case, we forgive you for not paying attention to your family. OK, maybe we don't. Perhaps your influence will allow your son not to be charged, and even if charges are brought, your influence will prevent him from seeing a real American jail cell. We the people know that special treatment will be given to your family while the rest of us suffer. Maybe he can have Paris Hilton's room at the jails clinic due to newly found medical conditions.

Al, go away. Quite honestly, go home and pick up where you left off, that is if you ever started, on being a dad. Leave us alone. We the majority were tired of seeing you in Washington, so we didn't elect you to the top seat. Maybe it would surprise you to learn I voted for Bill twice, but for you never.

Now is the best time to back out of politics and deal with addictions. I am speaking of yours needing to be in the news, your wife's for trying to impose her moral and ethical will on us, and your kids drug problems. How much would it mean to your kids if you gave up being seen on TV just to help them? Go away, leave our families to us, and go deal with yours!
